Day 3: TSAVO WEST B,L,D

Full days spent in the park with morning and afternoon game drives. Tsavo is Kenya’s largest national park and comprises two halves, West and East, divided by the main road from Mombasa to Nairobi. The park has historical significance beginning with the building of the “Iron Snake” railway from Mombasa to Uganda over 100 years ago. It was here that the man-eating lions of Tsavo preyed upon the railway workers and held up construction until they were eventually hunted down by Colonel Patterson. The remote Southern part of Tsavo West was the site of several World War 1 battles. More recently in the 1960s and 70s, Tsavo contained enormous numbers of elephant and rhino until poaching took its toll and reduced their presence dramatically. Nowadays, while Tsavo West has outstandingly beautiful landscapes with diverse wildlife habitats, Tsavo East has generally better game viewing as the animals are less spread out. From Kilaguni, great expanses of open plains stretch in all directions with Mount Kilimanjaro, the Chyulu hills, the Taita hills and Ngulia Mountains on different horizons. The views from Roaring rocks and Poacher’s lookout are truly spectacular. Elephant, buffalo, giraffe, lion, leopard, cheetah, rhino and most common species of plains game and smaller mammals are present so wildlife viewing is varied but requires some patience. A visit to Mzima Springs where crystal clear water bubbles up from underground may reveal hippo and crocodile, seen from an underwater viewing hide. Bird life is extraordinarily colourful and diverse with the Ngulia Mountains hosting many migratory species at certain times of the year. All meals and overnight stay will be at Finch Hattons Tented Camp.

Spend the next 3 nights at Angama Mara Camp inclusive of All safaris into the Mara Triangle, Walking safaris on the Escarpment, All meals and drinks (excluding French Champagne), Laundry service, Emergency medical evacuation insurance, VAT and levies, – Child minding.

On the rim of the Great Rift Valley Escarpment, overlooking the Mara Triangle, with vast amounts of animals, and most spectacularly the iconic wildebeest migration, lies Angama Mara. A place where the light never sits still. The sun shining through the clouds creates chaotic shadows, ever on the move across the Mara plains. The sky – ‘anga’ in Swahili – melts into the horizon, and it is hard to define where it ends and the earth begins. The lovely Swahili word ‘angama’, meaning ‘hanging or suspended in midair’, inspired the name Angama Mara. The site completely speaks to this, as each tented suite and guest area hangs on the edge of the Rift Valley, with views that quite simply take your breath away.

Day 5-6 : MASAI MARA-ANGAMA: B, L, D.

Full days spent in the reserve with scheduled safari activities. Elephant and Buffalo abound in the riverine forests, while out on the grasslands Impala and Thompson’s gazelle can be seen together with their attendant predators such as lion, Cheetah, Hyena and Jackal. The Mara is, in fact, the northern part of the Serengeti ecosystem and plays host to the vast herds of migratory wildebeest and zebra during the months of July to October. Lesser known species such as topi, hartebeest, waterbuck Eland and many small mammals create a kaleidoscopic picture of wildlife. All meals and overnight stay will be at Angama Mara Camp.
